The Main Ritual will rid each person (who makes an effort to participate freely) of things they no longer wish to have in their lives such as things that cause them pain or disharmony, bad habits, lack of confidence, problems, etc., and replace the space those things took in the spirit and in the body and daily lives with positivity, love, prosperity, strength, power and being able to tap the source of universal energy that is available to all of us. The goal is for them to FEEL their power of goodness and beauty, ending things negative or no longer of use to them and offering them rebirth of what they want in their lives.
Giving and receiving is an essential part of the ritual so those putting it on should give wonderful gifts to all the participants prior to the ritual. All participants should be encouraged to use their own words and should not be given scripts to memorize. No one who asks to be in the ritual should be left out. That is an important part of the ritual. It is another form of giving and allowing.
Prior to the procession, paint will be made available in the pavilion (or for vendors who cannot leave their booths, paint will be taken to them for their convenience). Everyone will be asked to decorate themselves with images of strength and power and boldness: things that would be meant to frighten “the enemy” which is any thing that could work against them in any way (such as poverty, pain, illness, hurt, etc.).
Drummers and chanters will call us to the Pavilion. Everyone will be instructed to move in the procession without speaking, focusing only on what they no longer want in their lives. We will do a stomp walk to the circle stomping out everything negative, painful or out of balance. At the entrance to the circle they will be misted with water as they enter and will be instructed to walk in silence to where they desire to stand, moving in a clockwise movement to that spot.
When all have gathered:
1. A male and a female child will acknowledge the East, standing silently as Lynda plays her awesome flute.) (elders to stand behind those children with their hands on the shoulders of the children to represent rebirth of the children with wisdom from the elders.)
2. A male and a female older teenagers or young adults will acknowledge the South, again saying what they are thankful for and adding what they hope for.
3. A male and a female middle aged adults will acknowledge the West, speaking their thanks and speaking what they hope for.
4. Male and female elders will hold hands with the children from the East, acknowledge the North and speak their thanks and then speaking what they hope for. This would represent the circle of death and rebirth, of age and youth. And again I would like Lynda to play her flute.)
5. A strong man will acknowledge Above and ask that Spirit bless us individually and as a community.
6. A woman will acknowledge Below and ask that all things hidden bless us individually and as a community.
7. A grandmother will acknowledge the Mother Earth and speak her thanks. (she will make one rotation around the circle speaking and handing out sage.)
8. A warrior will acknowledge the Air.
9. A man of fire will acknowledge Fire. He will make one rotation around the circle with a torch speaking his words.
10. A woman will acknowledge Water. The conch will be blown and Libby will make one rotation around the circle sprinkling us with water from a large shell.
11. A strong person who is good with words or voice will acknowledge Center, bringing the power of all the directions and elements into the heart of each person and drawing the power.
The Blessings Rotation:
Each person offering a blessing will stand in the circle facing the fire and being an even number of feet apart. Each person except the Phoenix will have arms overhead bent towards the fire. As each person is ready and has their words formulated they will say “HO!” When all are ready they will face the circle and walk up close to them. The heartbeat drumming will begin and the circle will begin to rotate facing those that are facing in while steadily stepping sideways to the right and repeating their blessing over and over until they have spoken it to everyone in the circle. All those offering blessings will all speak aloud (but somewhat quietly) at the same time as they move around in the circle so that they have spoken quietly to each person in the circle. Only the Phoenix will not speak during this time although she will move around the circle looking intently at each person silently. When all those speaking blessings have made one full circle everyone but the Ginger will step back and Ginger will become the Phoenix. She has worked on her role privately and with me and she knows what to do shamanically.
The following blessings will be offered:
1. A person will offer a shamanic blessing, bringing in power, the energy of our grandmothers and grandfathers and all our relations in native tongue and in English.
2. Another will offer a Taoist blessing and say what he chooses to say.
3. Another will offer the blessing of the warrior to the community.
4. A woman will address the Lord and Lady, acknowledging them and drawing the power within her will bless the circle and our intent.
5. Another woman will offer a blessing to all those unseen and forgotten deities.
6. Another will offer a native blessing in a native tongue.
7. Someone who is WELL TRAINED will call the Phoenix and bring in that energy to bless the group and help set the stage.
The group will then be instructed to focus on what they desire to bring into their lives and maintain the good things that are already in their lives. Drumming will begin and a chant of “I Am”. The Phoenix will begin by going to select people and demanding to know what they have to offer or what they wish to become. People will be encouraged to yell out what they want, what they feel they are, what they wish to feel, what they wish to have, what they wish to become, etc. It will be appropriate for others to yell out, whoop, lelelelelele, etc. loudly in support of what people have called out. The drumming will progressively get a little bit louder and a little bit faster until it has reached a crescendo. (The drummers will be in charge of watching the energy and determining when to let it begin to fade.) The louder the yelling, the more chaos during this part the better. We are aiming for primal feelings, sounds and acknowledgement of others. Dancing, jumping and leaping will be appropriate until the drumming stops if people so desire.
A small cauldron with a very small fire in it will be placed in the circle with a guardian on each side of it and everyone will be invited to “jump the flame” to seal their desire for the coming year and to agree with Spirit that what they have said is now so. (A cauldron will be provided for a fire inside that is small enough so that anyone who cannot move easily, with disabilities, or anyone who is young or a small child, can safely cross the flame without being burned or injured.) Crossing the flame is accompanied by whooping and howling in acknowledgment of their success. This is the body of the ritual. The most important part. This is when all participants in the circle make their pledge to self or community or loved ones and seal that commitment by crossing the flame. The Phoenix has the words and ways to help them. Drummers should assist by picking up the pace as the participants get braver and wilder. When this is complete the drumming will ease back down to a quiet heartbeat and finally to silence.
People will be given a moment to silently thank the deities they honor for the presence in their lives. We will finish with a circle within a circle with each person greeting every other person silently acknowledging their intent or offering them a blessing, looking them in the eye and touching palms together then passing on to the next. Singers will since the song of peace and beauty and people are free to leave the circle.
Music other than drumming should come in softly along the exit path as people leave so that their spirits are lifted high and free and with joy.
Note: I strongly advise the ones doing the ritual to be the most generous in their gifts to participants, to allow ANYONE who asks to be in the ritual to have a spot they can fill even if you have to add one or five or even more. And since this is a shamanic ritual, I advise whomever puts the ritual on to remember to ALLOW. If someone needs to make an announcement, allow it – they will be filling their role. If someone wishes to honor someone, allow it – it will have been meant to be. I wouldn’t offer these options, but if they come your way then they are intended to be so, and all you have to do is “allow”. There is NO room for ego, nor haughtiness, nor austerity, nor demanded reverence. The object is to leave all participants filled with joy that comes from within them that the ritual is designed to help them tap into. The theme for those putting the ritual on is GIVE and ALLOW.
